SUSTAINABLE WORLD: WATER

This activity is a part of Etwinning Project STEAM for 5PS in partnership with 5 Scientix Ambassador Teachers from Turkey, Greece, and Portugal. This learning scenario is applied as an international online meeting, and worked in transnational teams (We used Zoom Break Out Rooms for student discussion groups but Microsoft Teams or other tools can be used as well). This learning scenario can also be applied as a single classroom activity.

Abstract: Water is the core of sustainable development goals and it is for socio-economic development, healthy ecosystems and for human survival itself. This lesson plan is intended to teach students the importance of clean water, raise awareness about sustainable development goals (SDG 6), and use STE(A)M education to address these goals and learn to deal with these problems to shape our future.

Objectives :

  • Discover the importance of water
  • Design water filtration systems with common materials
  • Understand the procedures to purify water
  • To set goals to use water efficiently
  • Develop speaking skills
  • Express their ideas through art

Real Life Questions :

  • Why is clean water important?
  • How water filtration systems work?
  • How can we reduce water consumption?

Teaching Resources :

Materials:

1ST STEP -BRAINSTORMING AND DISCUSSION
(20 MIN)

  • Dirty Water
  • A Bottle (Cut in half)
  • Cotton
  • Sand
  • Charcoal
  • Gravel
  • Rocks

Online Tools: Online tools.: Zoom or Microsoft Teams (for online meetings)
Padlet (for student reflection and sharing drawings)
Cartoon video introducing Sdg 6 –Thomas & Friends on Clean Water & Sanitation

Real-life problem

Ask Students: Imagine that tomorrow when you wake up there is no clean water. What will happen? What problems can you have? Open Break Out Rooms (groups of five ) students discuss in transnational groups. Each room selects a spokesperson to share group ideas in the main room with other groups.

Designing Water Filters :
Students apply the designing process with the help of the Science Teacher
Materials:
Dirty Water
A Bottle (Cut in half)
Cotton
Sand
Charcoal
Gravel
Rocks
Cut the bottle in half. The bottom part will be used as the cup water where filtered waterfalls in. Put the cotton in it. Add sand, charcoal, gravel and rocks in layers. Add the dirty water. Watch it come out clear.

3RD STEP : ENVIRONMENT ( 30 MIN)

Students are again split into groups of five in break-out rooms
Discuss: What can you do to reduce water pollution? Do you think these solutions require international cooperation ?
Then, group spokesperson share group findings with other groups in the main room.

Students felt engaged in break-out room activities because they felt confident in speaking in a small group.

The use of BORs provides the opportunity to work in small groups in a real-life classroom and facilitates real-time collaboration. Additionally, it can help students feel a sense of community and students feel more confident speaking in small groups. However, it requires careful preparation. Therefore, we prepared guidelines for the meeting to avoid possible problems, prepared links for each session before the meeting (because Zoom allows only 40 min. per session), and kept the number of students between 6 to 8 to keep everyone engaged. Project teachers accompanied students in BORs to encourage students and help them gain confidence.

4TH STEP -DRAW PICTURES /ART (40 MIN)

This week World Water Day is celebrated all around the world. Draw a picture about what you have learned and celebrate World Water Day.
Teachers can also do this as an extension activity after the online session, and may ask students to share drawings on a Padlet Wall, so they can see each other work.

Here is some student drawings:

ASSESSMENT

Each student writes a brief reflection on their learning experience on a common Padlet Wall.
– What is the most important thing you learned today?
– What do you want to learn more ? Why ?
– What can you do with what you know?
