OUR TRANSFORMATION TO NATURE

SUMMARY

In addition to the activities we carry out to reduce environmental pollution, we gain environmental awareness and use economic information by throwing information about protecting both nature and resources, efficient use of natural resources and gaining nature-friendly habits. STEM engineering will feed both fish and plants at the same time and in the same container, designing their homes and water containers according to the design stages. As a result, through our activity, students, teachers and people around us will conserve and increase resources in our schools. Age of the activity: 7 to 10 years old staff.

OBJECTIVES

5- To solve the problems they encounter in daily life according to the engineering design stages (STEM).
6- Raising awareness for a sustainable future

TİME:

2 WEEKS

PROBLEM STATUS:

Students are asked to design according to Engineering Design Steps (STEM) (AQUAPONIC AQUARIUM) by feeding both plants and animals simultaneously with fish droppings, a combination of soilless agriculture and water.

MATERIALS:

Pet Bottle, lava fracture, some earth, some ornamental stone, parsley with roots cleared from the soil, plant seedlings or seeds, a piece of fish, scissors and rope

INTER-DISCIPLINARY RELATIONS:

Science.
It offers suggestions for the solution of an environmental problem in its immediate surroundings or in our country. It predicts the environmental problems that may occur in the future as a result of human activities. Discusses the benefits and harms in human-environment interaction on examples.
Designs a project for the recycling of domestic solid and liquid wastes.
Provides solutions to problem situations
Realizes the importance of resources and recycling necessary for life.
Maths .
It creates different geometric shapes with the same circumference. Solves problems related to calculating the perimeter of shapes.
Engineering .
Uses the engineering design cycle. Prepare, test and develop the product’s prototype
Technology .
Uses the necessary technologies to design components. Uses the necessary measuring instruments to develop the prototype. Through his technology literacy, he demonstrates the ability to access information, select, use and troubleshoot existing technologies, and develop ideas and theories by actively exploring real-world problems.

WORKING PROCESS

1-DISCUSSION OF THE PROBLEM:
While talking to each other during breathing, they start looking for an answer to the question of whether we can feed plants and animals at the same time. He shared this situation with his classmates. They met with their classmates to find a solution to this situation. In this project, our students will design an Aquaponic aquarium using waste material according to the Stem engineering design steps.

2-SOLUTION PRODUCTION:
The students were given a problem situation where both animals and plants could feed and live at the same time and in the same place. An online meeting was held to get the students’ solution suggestions. At the end of the meeting, they presented a few design examples to solve this problem.

3-PLANNING – DRAWING:
Papers and pens are distributed to student groups. Students are asked to draw an aquaponic aquarium from waste materials.

4-PRODUCT CREATION:
According to the drawn design, aquaponic aquarium-related models are made with available materials.

5- TEST PRODUCT – DEVELOP:
The aquaponic aquarium made was tested. It was decided to change and develop the ropes that do not absorb the water that we attach to our aquariums.

RESULTS

As a result of the project, we designed an aquaponic aquarium from recycled materials according to Engineering Design Steps. In addition, another result of our project is that we have instilled in our students thanks to the project we made on “cooperation sharing, cooperation, problem solving creativity and recycling”, which is one of the values of “Values Education”. We observed the models we created for two weeks in our classroom. Thus, we created possible solutions for the animal and plant to live in the same place. Thanks to the designs we made, we observed that we have created awareness for the people participating in the project exhibition about protecting nature and using waste materials.
