Awareness Scenarios With Storyboard

As the students have learnt scenerio writing, they can also learn how to transfer the ideas visually, how to In Design&Technology lesson of 7th graders, students are asked to make an advertisement scenerio by involving visual narration. Apply these ideas in film, advertisement, series and animation production process, how to prepare the stages in cinematic circumstances via drawing a storyboard. The aim of creating storyboard drawings are to introduce the relation between the notion of design and creativity process in ideas in film, advertisement, series and animation. Within this scope, movie structure, composition, stage continuity and students’ visual literacy are developed. All students are able to advance in drawing skills as well as visualisation of the concepts and ideas by storyboard. All these advancements are actualized by the way of interactive narrations, arguments, presentation, video clips and workshops. Storyboard drawing and video application stages can be used by the secondary school teachers in order to enhance their creativity process which is in accordance with stated learning outcome.

Within in the compass of Scientix competition, students set up a project by departing from the ideas learnt through storyboard drawing techniques. The awareness has been raised by the storyboard drawings in the subject of “sustainability and citizenship” which is the theme of this year’s Scientix Project.

IN-CLASS APPLICATION
Scientix Project was carried out by Tuğçe PAKMAN, who is the teacher of Design&Technology lesson, with 53 students in four different 7th grade classes (7/A, 7/B, 7/C & 7/D) between 15 March 2021 and 15 April 2015.


Scientix Project competition was introduced to 7th grade students (12-13 years old) and the road map was determined with the students in online lessons.

  • In 80-minute online lesson between 15 and 19 March 2021, students point of views about“sustainability and citienship” were collected and detailed by brain storming.
    Students carried out a research about the topic, by the search engines and they shared all the findings between each other. Within this scope, the lesson was operated as following below:
    Students watched a video (linked as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2w6rxAogpw) called “ Emma Watson Is Telling Global Goals” allining with 2030 Sustainable Development Goals which were declared by The United Nations
    UNDP Turkey Website briefing and the following 17 target theme were evaluated

In line with browsing and researching of the students, the videos called “Global Goals for Suustainable Development” ( link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvyYCeXr4Og ) and “Demographic Indicators and Sustainable Development Aims” (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHQ71Q9IlEs ) were analyzed.
For the following lesson, in order to raise an awareness about “sustainability and citizenship” topic, students were told to mind storm about Storyboard and its scenerio drafts that they will be administering.

  • At the second 80-minute online lesson (between 22 and 26 March 2021), started by the previous lesson summary, students were asked to share their visual scenerio drafts to each other. In this session, they expressed reinforcing and developing critiques among themselves.

The “Storyboard That” software, which was provided by our school to carry out this project and protect legal processes, with a low-budget three-month subscription, was used for our students to create their visual scenarios. In the “Storyboard That” software, by providing a teacher-controlled online classroom, the ideas asserted by our students were observed. Thus, by following the activity situations in the lesson, they were assisted to visualize their content and put them in the application stages.

  • In the third 80-minute online lesson that took place between 29 March – 2 April 2021; our students were asked to have access in the online classroom environment in the “Storyboard That” software with the link given by the teacher, and they were expected to visualize and apply the title-description and 3×2 scenario design ideas in a total of 6 spaces.
    During the course, the students were informed about the evaluation criteria and the rubric to be used by Tuğçe PAKMAN.

SCHOOL COMPETITION
20 of the 58 students who prepared storyboards for the project wanted to participate in the competition organized within the school. A competition has been organized to select the best 5 storyboard idea projects among the students and to represent our school. The criterias of this competition were evaluated by 5 jury members (Visual Arts Teacher Şennur HAN, Visual Arts Teacher Şensin KARATAŞ, English Teacher Seda AKAR, English Teacher Didem ÖZTÜRK, Drama and Theater Teacher Naciye ALPAY) by using “Quick Rublic” software.


In the “Quick Rublic” software, with Competence 16- 20, Emerging 11-15, Middle Level 6-10, Beginning 0-5 points out of 100 points in total, evaluation has been made by based on 5 different criterias which are Subject Research / Dominance, Understanding and Transferring the Subject, Scenario Creation and Originality, Editing and Scenario Continuity, English Language Use.

The jury team consisting of our teacher Tuğçe PAKMAN, who conducts the Technology Design courses and Scientix project work, and our school teachers gathered on the Zoom online platform on April 21, 2021, examined and evaluated the visual scenario designs. As a result of the evaluation, it was decided that our student 5 would represent our school.

COMPETITION RESULTS

According to the evaluation results;
The student Elvin HAN who got 98 points. (with recycle project)
The student Ada BODUR who got 94 points. (with nature destruction project)
The student Ergün Süleyman ÇEBİ who got 93 points. (with sustainable energy project)
The student Beren BUYRUKÇU who got 92 points. (with air pollution project)
The student Güneş GÖCEK who got 90 points. (with poverty and relief project)
were chosen and decided to represent our school.
