GENERAL AIM OF PROJECT

In this project, our students in the center aim at a level related to the CSO workshops between disciplines of ‘Sustainability’, which is open to descent and generating solutions in a central and integrated approach in resources. . This goal-oriented project has two objectives:

  1. To provide students with the concept of yaşam sustainable life alan in the world agenda and rapidly entering education curricula
  2. While developing this awareness, STEM workshops enable students to develop a analytical and scientific perspective on sustainability issues.

Among the Sustainable Goals, especially to reach food, clean water, health services, affordable and clean energy (SDG, 2,6,7), but also to protect ecosystems and reduce climate change (SDG 14,15,13), for sustainable cities and living spaces Making smart city designs (SDG 11) is within the scope of STEM education applications. In line with this data, STEM education has been seen as an appropriate method for students to acquire the 5 goals chosen to work in this project from the Global Goals with an interdisciplinary approach and by doing. The general purpose of this project is to enable students to gain awareness of sustainable life at an early age and to develop their ability to produce scientific solutions to problems in line with awareness through STEM education.

TARGET AUDIENCE OF THE PROJECT:

Within the scope of the project, 30 students between the ages of 9-11 from 6 different schools in Mersin province were studied. These 30 students are the primary target audience of the project. Within the scope of the dissemination of the project, students who received education in these 6 schools within the scope of the project organized STEM workshops as “Sustainable Life Leaders”. 20 students from each school attended the workshops. In this way, 120 students were reached with the project. The third target audience of the project is teachers. Project workshops were carried out online with teachers using a distance education tool. 1513 teachers participated in teacher training.

CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT

Actions to be taken for the education of humanity are of great importance for the sustainable development of the planet. The concept of “Sustainable Development” will be one of the important agendas of the future society. However, in order for this concept to solve the environmental problems faced by today’s humanity, it must completely cover the concepts of equality, justice, sociality, democracy, human need and environmental value. In this context, the awareness of sustainable development and living a sustainable life can only be created by applying a planned and scientific education program that can bring the mentioned values to students at an early age. In ensuring sustainable development, it is important to gain a scientific attitude with the concept of sustainability, which will be reflected in the education and training of 21st century children.

In order to achieve this goal, 30 students from Mersin province to be selected by evaluating the applications within the framework of the determined criteria will be studied. Within the scope of the studies, the following 5 goals related to Environmental Sustainability, one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, were determined:

• Day 1-Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation-Water Filtering System, Water Analysis STEM workshop

• Day 2-Goal 7: Accessible Clean Energy-Energy conversions with Dynamo, fruit cell, wind and solar energy STEM workshop

• Day 3-Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities- Smart city designs with Arduino, smart agriculture STEM workshop

• 4th Day-Goal 13: Climate Action- Carbon emission and melting of glaciers STEM workshop

• Day 5 – Goal 14-15: Aquatic Life and Terrestrial Life – Recycling STEM workshop for biodiversity conservation

During the 5 days during which the project will be carried out, presentations, seminars, augmented and virtual reality, nature-based mind games, orff and drama activities will be carried out with collaborative group activities in order to create sustainable awareness of environment and life in various natural and workshop areas with students within the framework of the Global Goals stated above. The target determined after the studies carried out for each goal will form the basis of a STEM workshop, and students will conduct STEM workshops to be conducted under the leadership of an expert with STEM Education in order to find a solution to the problem of exhaustion towards the goal of each day, with a scientific attitude towards the problem and developing a model for the solution. Thus, it is predicted that students will gain a scientific attitude towards world and country problems and a solution-oriented perspective. Sustainable awareness will develop.

DAILY IMPLEMENTATION STAGES OF THE PROJECT

The training activities carried out within the scope of the activity program are as follows:

1 DAY: Clean Water And Sanitation-Water Filtering System, Water Analysis Stem Workshop

• Awareness presentation of the UN Development Goals for Access to Clean Water Goal

• A game event was held for water footprint awareness

• The theme of sustainability of water was processed with the Tick tock Boom Game

Water footprint calculated

• PH and chlorine levels and drinkability of the water were analyzed by taking samples from running water.

• Water Filtering System Model Study STEM workshop was held.

• An emotional bonding effort with leaves and trees on the ground was carried out with Children’s Pilates.

• Poster studies were carried out with the NATURE and BEN study for the end of the day portfolio evaluation.

• Learned with the Kahoot application was reinforced.

2 DAYS: Accessible Clean Energy-Energy conversions with Dynamo, fruit cell, wind and solar energy STEM workshop

• Solar Robot design, natural energy production with fruit cell, spin the propeller with solar panels STEM workshops were held.

• Poster studies were carried out with the NATURE and BEN study for the end of the day portfolio evaluation.

4 DAYS: Climate Action- Carbon emission and melting of glaciers STEM workshop

5 DAYS: Aquatic Life and Terrestrial Life – Recycling STEM workshop for biodiversity conservation

Actıvıtıes Made:

• A presentation on the diversity of terrestrial life was made by Alata Horticultural Engineers, which is one of the UN Development Goals, targeting the protection of biodiversity, living on land, aquatic life.

• A field trip was made to exemplify the diversity of terrestrial life.

• In the advanced technology laboratory, the students were told how the endangered plant species were protected by MICRO AGRICULTURE in order to protect biodiversity.

• Again, soil analysis study was carried out in the Advanced Technology Laboratory.

• The game “Let’s Save the Monarch Butterfly” about the conservation of biodiversity was played.

• Reverse Engineering STEM workshop was held

• A sustainability-themed taboo game was played.

AT THE RESULT OF THE PROJECT:

Each student will introduce the project in their own school with an event and presentation. Thus, the multiplier effect will be achieved in the schools of the participant selected students.

After the project was completed, an online seminar was held for teachers in Yenişehir district. Thus, the teachers participating in this seminar gain the awareness that science and STEM activities are effective in gaining environmental sustainability behavior and they will be willing to participate in such studies.

Within the scope of the project, students’ perception of susceptible life and the behavior of seeking solutions with scientific attitudes against problems have become internalized. In this way, students will develop responsible consumption behavior, take care to protect nature for a sustainable world, develop their scientific attitude and understanding with STEM activities, and are also prepared for the professions of the future. Perhaps they will do important science work of the future by choosing to pursue professional development in the STEM field.

Çağımızın temel sorunlarından biri olan çevre sorunlarının çözümü noktasında kilit rol oynayacak; “Sürdürülebilir Dünya” farkındalığını erken yaşta kazandırmaya yönelik harika bir proje gerçekleştirildi. Üstelik bu farkındalığı çağdaş ve yaratıcı bir yöntem olan STEM uygulamaları şeklinde; öğrencilerin yaparak, yaşayarak içselleştirmelerini sağlayan bir proje oldu. Proje ekibinde yer alan biri olarak bu tespiti çok rahatlıkla yapabiliyorum. Çünkü bu tespit; kişisel gözlemime, proje ekibinin gözlem ve analizlerine, öğrenci ve veli söylemlerine dayanmaktadır. Projemiz, öğrencilerimize “Sürdürülebilir Dünya” konusunda önemli hedef davranışları kazandırdığı için projenin geliştirilmesinde ve uygulanmasında emeği geçen; başta Pınar Arısoy olmak üzere tüm proje ekibi büyük bir alkışı hak ediyor.
