About dozkutuk

I m a science teacher at private middle school in Turkey. I graduated from Integrated BS&MS program in teaching physics at Boğaziçi University. Its my 8th year in my profession. My master thesis was also about stem education in science.

STEM Museum Project with LightLab Simulation

Author: Deniz Özkütük

Date: 20 April 2021

Target group: 11-14 years old

Duration of activity: 40’

Before the pandemic, this activity was applied as a stem activity in lab. Students design a lighting system by using the reflection of light in the museum they created with real materials. They use simulations to research, they calculate the budget and draw their design and finally they construct the museum. Students use lazer and mirrors to lighting the exhibition areas in the museum.

After the pandemic, I need to change this activity to online version. They should have designed it by working together remotely. This activity is applied in 20th April, after two weeks that students learn basic properties of light, its diffusion and reflection by integrating Light Lab simulation in activity.

In this activity, students are randomly divided into 4 groups. STEM Museum Project with Lightlab simulation group document is shared with students on Nearpod. . The students are asked to complete the five chapters in the simulation and make a museum model in the 6th chapter and to design an enlightenment system that provides lighting exhibition areas where the works are exhibited using mirrors, light-proof blocks and glass blocks.

This system should be made according to the rules of light reflection. Students design the model in accordance with the criteria specified in the task document by using the 3 different items given and calculating the budget. With the solution of the problem, the following gains are aimed;

Science; Students discover the relationship between the incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal of the surface in the reflection of light.

Maths; They make budget and angle calculations in accordance with the desired criteria

Technology; Students discovers the reflection rule of light with Light Lab simulation.

Engineering; It determines the materials according to the specified criteria and creates a digital model as a result of the necessary calculations and designs.

The groups that prepare their designs in accordance with the instructions explain the system they have created by sharing the final version of their designs on the Nearpod,in the collaborate board section.

Presentation: After students complete their designs, they explain their designs to other groups. After the presentation of each study, feedback is given by the teacher, taking into account the criteria mentioned at the beginning.
