Integrating skills in Science curriculum for secondary schools to STEM Program.
Engage (40’ x 2hr x 2days)
At the first week of the study, students observed that density is a feature for matters by conducting experiments.
Explore
Students compared the density of water with the other matters’ density. They recognised that the density is affected by the temperature. They discovered that the density of liquids which are not dissolved in another liquids is different. They compared the density of liquid form of water and the density of solid form of water. They discussed the importance of this density difference for the living beings.
Explain
Some examples for what students have learnt:
Students have learnt that If the temperature is below +4 °C, the volume of water increases and its density is below 1. In the arctics, the floating ice on water provides a healthy life for the living beings. They have recognised that If the density of waste oil is 0,92, it becomes a risk to life for the living beings in water.
Students made a research about the accoustics of modern and cultural architecture. They showed interest to the instruction ways of Hieropolis Ancient Theatre and Süleymaniye Mosque.
They have learnt that Sinan, the architect of Sülaymaniye Mosque, located 255 empty water jugs in the dome of the mosque for a good accoustics(Çamlıca çocuk) . He also placed hot waterline under the floor of the mosque for heat insulation. (1)https://www.evvelcevap.com
Elaborate ( 40’ x 2hr x 2 days)
Basic life skills such as analytical thinking, deciding, creativity, entreprenuership, communication and collaboration includes the 21st century skills. All these skills also take placein the Science curriculum for secondary schools.
It is observed that students shared their researches on an online meeting and they created an awareness by disscussing these researches.
Examples for the videos that students watched while making research:
The areas where density is used?
How density is used in paper marbling art?
Is it possible to recycle waste oil and waste paper?
What is the architectural tricks of ancient theatres and Süleymaniye Mosque?
Students were divided into four groups and given questions randomly.
1st group: If the sea contained waste oil, what would happen?
2nd group: You felt cold in this winter season, how would you design your winter clothes?
3rd group: You couldn’t hear the music or words in a play, how would design the theatre hall?
4th group: Is the food fresh or stale?
(Students’ Skills: It is observed that students studied using 21st century skills such as communication and collaboration, creativity and desinging.)
Method: Flipped Learning, Problem Solving-based Learning, Inquiry-based Learning.
Students are allowed to make research and generate prototypes.
Evaluate (40’ x 2hr x 2 days)
It was observed that students combined lerning from multiple disciplines such as Science, Mahs, Technology, Art, Engineering and Social Sciences to come up with new ways to think about issues and solve ploblems. They developed strategies to create added value to their products. ( Designing and Engineering Skills) Each group wrote an article about their subject and made a presentation at school.
