Flipbook & Poster

School: 3DSchool, Lviv, Ukraine

Date: 14-18 April 2022

During this school spring time we learn online. And our students so tired to be actively involved into the learning process so I suggested to create the projects which based on the stories, such as ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl and ‘The Song of Hiawatha’ by Henry Longfellow.

Online reading is a hard task for students. It requires a deep reading and this skill must be practiced. Readers follow the plot and analyze the ideas imposed by an author. And processing is staying in this moment while reading online is the biggest challenge to everyone. So reading the text was students’ homework. They were aware of the book’s theme and idea, the main heroes, a plot, etc. Therefore we brainstorm ideas, form the teams, create a narratives, design a flipbook and poster.

What we need:
Be familiar with ‘flipbook’ and ‘poster’.

We checked information in Google and chose the next definition:
Flipbook is an online publication. [1]
Poster is a usually large printed sheet that often contains pictures and is posted in a public place. [2]

Understand the overall project.

It is the collective project when everyone is involved in discussion and creating processes. All students are encouraged to share their point of view, write comments.

Plan students’ roles.

We share duties with next way:
1 student is graphic illustrator,
3-4 students are story writers,
3-4 students are design-idea contributors,
2-3 students are IT specialists,
1 student is SMM.

Prepare for the technical aspect.
Writing and drawing or inserting images.
Converting to pdf.
Choosing platforms where to present the work’s results.
Finally we chose Issue, KeyNotes, YouTube.

Define timeline.
It can ensure students stay focused on projects.
And projects should be completed within weeks.

How it works
During the lesson presented projects to students and created a group channel (Telegram) where students will be able to discuss and post images.

Suggest students the projects’ goals and ideas.
For 5th graders:
create poster/posters where visualize the main idea of the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl.
For 6th graders:
create flipbook where share the thoughts about the quote from the book ‘The Song of Hiawatha’ by Henry Longfellow
“Why then are you not contented?
Why then will you hunt each other?” [3]
and suggest the possible solutions.

Encourage students to discuss and prove their point of view. Check every lesson what teams have prepared, what they may change and what next steps.

And at the last lesson students present their works via Teams.
Give children reflections which consider how they structure their ideas.
