Game Based Education in Teaching Factors Affecting Shadow Dimension

It is possible to show the full shadow with experiments. However, the game-based learning method is more effective in order for the learning to be permanent and to ensure that the students learn while having fun. Students are at the 5th grade level.  This method is suitable for the age of the students. With this method, the students show the shadow of the puppets they have prepared on the screen and tell their plays as a story. They observe that the shadow length changes as its position relative to its source changes.

Objectives:

To teach in which situations the shadow size grows and in which situations it decreases, to enable students to learn by having fun, to increase students’ motivation.

Age of students:

10-11 years old

Duration:

4 lesson hours

Materials:

  • Puppets prepared by students to observe their shadow with the materials at home
  • Curtain and  light source

Summary:

First of all, in order to learn the basic information about the subject, it would be appropriate to show the situations that change the size of the full shadow by experiment. Then, I asked the students to prepare a shadow play in order to learn the subject permanently and I gave the necessary information for this. The light source and curtain from the materials required for the shadow play are available in our laboratory. The students made a puppet that they wanted to look at and brought it to the class. They also had preparations for the storytelling they would do during the play.

Each of the students who came ready for the lesson before starting their own play, both drew attention to their play and said ‘Welcome to My Shadow Play’ to their friends, accompanied by a short musical accompaniment. After the applause of his friends, he shared the story he created with his puppet and shadow. At the same time, he added to his story in which situations the shadow length changes.

The students shared the following information about the shadow length:

• When the puppet (object) approaches the screen, the shadow size gets smaller.

• The shadow length becomes larger as the puppet (object) approaches the light source.

Assessment:

It is important to evaluate the process. We used the following scale for this.

 IntermediateGoodVery  Good
information is correct
Presentation  is remarkable
The subject has given the relevant information as much as necessary.
It made learning fun.

Conclusion:

This method was both fun and motivating for the students. It made the information permanent. It enabled the students to develop creativity, entrepreneurship and communication skills, which are among the skills of the 21st century.

Colorful Science

Summary:

We planned stem activities related to the subjects we dealt with in the school. We produced products with the scientific information we learned.

Explanation Of The Lesson Plan:

I planned the Stem activities online. While planning, I have based on providing students with 21st century skills. I made separate planning for each lesson.

Learning Goals:

Students to learn by doing and experiencing. Thus, I wanted to provide permanent learning.

Main Objectives of the Lesson Plan:

Creativity skill develops.

Students gain problem solving skills. They offer solutions to problems encountered in life.

Hand-eye harmony improves. For example, the hand muscles work better.

Students focus better. So they understand the lessons better.

ICT Tools and Resources:

Students used textbooks and the internet as resources. Because they were at home due to the pandemic.Studies in the textbook gave us an idea. We produced our own designs by making questions and answers. We wanted the designs to be remarkable. Each design reflects the creativity of the students.

Learning Area:

During the pandemic period, we generally continued distance education. That’s why the learning space has gone online. In distance education, lessons were taught on the ‘Zoom Program’ and www.eba.gov.tr. When the schools were open, the students brought their work at home to school.

Scenario Description:

We conducted stem activities with middle school students aged 11-14. We applied project-based learning in line with the acquisitions in the curriculum.

Setting Goals

Development of curriculum design questions

Planning the evaluation process

Planning design activities

Setting Goals:

Our goals are about the subjects we learn at school. These goals are in the curriculum.

We have planned the following activities with 6th grade students:

Sound is a type of energy. We designed an activity and them we can monitor this energy.

Another goal was to build a density tower using immiscible liquids.

We wanted to prepare a model with sound insulation.

Our other goal was to show that different sounds are heard as the sound source changes.

We have planned the following activities with 7th grade students:

We aimed to create a variety of molecular models.

Another goal was to design a vehicle that would reduce the effect of air and water resistance.

We wanted to prepare a model that shows the structure of the atom and the elementary particles in its structure.

It was among the aims to make new items of waste from waste materials.

We wanted it to have a constellation model

Developing Curriculum-Framing Questions:

I want them to think by asking various questions to the students. The questions were appropriate for the age and level of the students. The gains were better grasped in the students who structured the information by thinking.

Planning the Evaluation Process:

The product and the process were evaluated together.Planning and scheduling were based on complementing each other. One of the main issues in the evaluation is the correct planning of the next step.Along with academic achievements, communication, sense of responsibility, and problem solving skills are also included in the assessment.Students made their studies better by getting feedback. It was very important to follow a way to increase the self-confidence of the students.

Improvable Good Very Good
Defines the problem.
Chooses the best solution.
Makes work that reflects creativity.
Shares his/her work.
Evaluates the work and wants to do better.
We used the form above while evaluating the students.

Planning Design Activities:

Students made stem activities with the materials found in their homes. They continued their studies outside of the class hours as well.We made sure to complete the activity on the subject we learned before moving on to a new topic.

We created moleculer models using play dough and beads.

Stem activities enabled students to pass the pandemic process more calmly.Problem solving skills and creativity of students develop with STEM activities.I can observe these skills in students. Most of the materials we used were recyclable. We used these materials in our events. Thus, we contributed to sustainability.
