Building the right worldview and behavior is one of the main goals of education, giving scientific knowledge about nature and developing their cognitive abilities, observation and aesthetic taste to be able to see the beauty in nature. Formation of habits and habits related to nature conservation and education of moral qualities, developing the need to communicate with nature.

In April, a series of events entitled “Guardians of the Natural Treasures” took place, where the knowledge acquired by the students was strengthened and enriched.

In the course of the events, the students in a fascinating and interesting way entered a subject not very familiar to them. They understood the significance of human actions in their interaction with our greatest wealth – Nature. They realized that anyone and at any time can help preserve it in the name of a better future.

In the first stage, students were challenged to become researchers, each with the task of conducting an experiment showing water, soil and air pollution. They kept a diary in which they recorded their assumptions, observations and the final result, with conclusions. Everyone shared that they found it very interesting and liked it.

PLANT IRRIGATION SYSTEM

LET’S MAKE A PLANT IRRIGATION SYSTEM

A plant needs water at every moment of its life cycle from germination to growth. Water is effective in seed germination, photosynthesis and growth of the plant.

The growth of a dehydrated plant slows down. If this situation continues for a long time, the plant may dry out.

Water is a vital substance for all living things in the world.

In this learning scenario, we want to design an irrigation system to prevent our plant from drying out while we are away.

In addition, we want to prevent water waste with this system.

Online meetings will be held with students on the zoom platform

This study will benefit from STEM education and the Science and Engineering design process.

Time: 4 lesson hours

Students’ Age: 12-13 years

Key Words: Plant, Growth, Irrigation Systems, Teamwork, Coding, STEM,

WHAT COMES FROM NATURE GOES TO NATURE

ABSTRACT

Pollution is a kind of damage to the environment. Substances or wastes cause it. Some pollution breaks down quickly. However, some might take thousands or millions of years to break down. Therefore, food waste is a global problem. It is threatening environmental, social and economic sustainability.

In this learning scenario, we are planning to find solutions to prevent environmental pollution. For instance, we can use homemade waste. In addition, we will have a useful product. Firstly, students will learn a way of preventing environmental pollution. It will be by recycling food waste at school or in their household. They will use a simple method. Secondly, they will be simulating the worm’s role in nature. Worms are used to recycle food into valuable soil. Thirdly, students will produce fertilizer for planting. They will help to clean the environment. Moreover, the pollution will decrease with the help of recycling. As a result, students will discuss other solutions for pollution. Also, they will prepare a final presentation of their findings. Some will prepare posters in Turkish or English.
