Water is Life

Link

Access to clean water, one of the problems caused by the global climate crisis, is the aim of our STEM plan, based on the Scientix Repository Resource “Shrink your water footprint.

The gradual decrease of clean water resources and access to clean water has become one of the biggest problems of our world.

We aimed to create nature-based solutions with our students for the efficient use of water resources.

We aimed that our students adopt a more sustainable lifestyle by understanding the effects and causes of climate change at an early age.

We also encouraged them to gain critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, cooperation and sense of responsibility at an early age.

Among 36 students aged 9-10, 19 were girls and 17 were boys. We carried out our activities in our classroom. Our activities took place between 4-20 April 2022.

To our students: 1- What does the blue part in the picture of our world represent?, 2-How much of our world is covered with water?, 3-Do you think we can use all of the water on Earth as drinking water?, 4-How much of our body is water?, 5-Why is water important for our life and what difficulties would we face without water?. We triggered feelings of curiosity by asking questions and brainstorming.

As the first step of conscious water consumption, we had water footprints calculated.

As part of the expert meetings, we talked to Dr. Akgün İlhan about “SU” on Zoom. Our students played the “Future of the World” game to say ‘I am in the Future of the World’, learned about the problems related to water and developed solutions.

Elif is 8 years old. There is a drought in his city. Water resources are dwindling rapidly. Elif and her family are struggling to find water for drinking and cleaning. Since problems began to be experienced in the irrigation of agricultural lands, the city where Elif lives can no longer produce from agricultural lands as much as before. Trying to understand the reason for all this, Elif shares her observations with her family, friends and teacher. They are starting to explore how we can reclaim our water through recycling. I explained the problem situation to my students. The students, who were divided into groups, started to create their prototypes by doing research on “Rainwater harvesting”.

Our students strengthened their ties with nature by developing nature-based STEM activities. Aware of the problems of the environment they live in, our students learned to be sensitive to the environment by questioning their role in the chain of life. They took steps towards efficient use of water resources. They have shrunk their water footprints. They started to change their lifestyles for a sustainable world.

Let’s buzz for STEM bees.

In this application, we sought an answer to the question of how we can protect bees based on climate change, and we integrated nature-based solutions with the body environment. We had our activities done sequentially according to the 5E model.

Because of climate change, flowers bloom untimely, making it difficult for bees to make honey. In our survey with children, they found it appropriate to build a greenhouse based on what has been said before about climate change. Are we teaching students that we will protect flowers, bees and use renewable energy in this greenhouse construction? First, by looking at the map of our region, empty areas were determined and greenhouses were planned to be built in accordance with this area. Flowers that bees love will be planted in these greenhouses. It is aimed to make greenhouses in certain places in and outside the city and to protect these greenhouses from rain and extreme cold in winter and to provide nutrients to bees by protecting them from extreme heat in summer. . It will be thought about heating and cooling using only solar or wind power, without the use of fossil fuels.

LOVE THE WORLD, PROTECT YOURSELF

SUMMARY

Global Warming occurs as a result of the various activities of people in our world. The main theme of our project is to create environmental protection awareness in our students and to raise awareness about climate change in students. In order to achieve this, we will carry out various activities related to recycling.

OBJECTIVES

  • To give the students in our class love of nature
  • To understand that nature and the animals in nature have a right to life
  • To teach the effects of climate change on living spaces of living things
  • To increase the awareness that some of the waste from our homes will be recycled
  • Solving problems they encounter in daily life according to engineering design stages (STEM).
  • Creating Nature-Based Solutions

TIME:

Three weeks

PROBLEM STATUS:

What activities can we do to prevent environmental pollution in our world? We will organize recycling activities with our students to find an answer to this question.

Movie For Sustainablity FOR STEM Workshops

GENERAL AIM OF PROJECT

In this project, our students in the center aim at a level related to the CSO workshops between disciplines of ‘Sustainability’, which is open to descent and generating solutions in a central and integrated approach in resources. . This goal-oriented project has two objectives:

  1. To provide students with the concept of yaşam sustainable life alan in the world agenda and rapidly entering education curricula
  2. While developing this awareness, STEM workshops enable students to develop a analytical and scientific perspective on sustainability issues.

Among the Sustainable Goals, especially to reach food, clean water, health services, affordable and clean energy (SDG, 2,6,7), but also to protect ecosystems and reduce climate change (SDG 14,15,13), for sustainable cities and living spaces Making smart city designs (SDG 11) is within the scope of STEM education applications. In line with this data, STEM education has been seen as an appropriate method for students to acquire the 5 goals chosen to work in this project from the Global Goals with an interdisciplinary approach and by doing. The general purpose of this project is to enable students to gain awareness of sustainable life at an early age and to develop their ability to produce scientific solutions to problems in line with awareness through STEM education.

Say ”Stop The Light Pollution”

I applied this learning scenario originating from Nature Based Solutions Mooc between April 21st and April 26th. My students had the chance to find solutions to light pollution using recycled materials.

Light pollution affects many living things in nature. Therefore light pollution and recycling are very important issues for the creatures in nature. Some species are becoming extinct due to light pollution. For example, beacuse of the light pollution the water turtles are heading for the land instead of the sea and it is a threat to their future. Similarly, many living and hunting animals at night cannot find prey due to light pollution. These problems also negatively affect the natural balance. Understanding recycling and gaining sensitivity to nature is an important skill for students to learn for a sustainable society.

In this learnning senario

Students ages: 7-10

Teaching time: 6 hours

Online teaching materials: Canva, Jigsawplanet, Learning apps, Kahoot, Google docs

Materials: Pieces of wood, iron pipe, straw, plastic bottle, cardboard cup, cable, light, wire, bulb

Project based learning(PBL) and STEM techniques are used.

At the end of the learning scenario students will be able to:

  • Explain  negative effects of the light pollution on wildlife and the observe the celestial bodies.
  • Realize the importance of resources and recycling necessary for life.
  • Solve the problems related to calculating the circumference of the shapes, which take millimeters from the standard length measurement units.
  • Recognize the circuit elements that make up the simple electrical circuit with their functions.
  • Build a working electrical circuit which includes engineering and technology skills.
  • This learning scenario has been applied in online lessons due to my pandemic process.
